 Saint John's Lutheran Church
presents
A Candlelight Vigil to commemorate the

71st Anniversary of Kristallnacht,

The "Night of Broken Glass"
Monday, November 9, 2009
7:00 p.m.

Featuring music by the Musica Bella Orchestra, and internationally acclaimed vocalists Ann McMahon Quintero, Martha Guth and Robert McPherson

On the evening of November 9, 1938, the government of Nazi Germany began burning down synagogues and smashing the glass fronts of Jewish shops in Berlin and other large cities in Germany and Austria.  That night has been called Kristallnacht, or the Night of Broken Glass.  From that time onward, the momentum of the Holocaust gathered force and led to wholesale persecution.  Please join St. John's Lutheran Church for a candlelight service of remembrance commemorating Kristallnacht.  The service will end with an active commitment to love, healing and peace for the world.

The Musica Bella Orchestra of New York will perform together with Tim Hill, Cantor at Saint John’s, in addition to internationally acclaimed vocalists Ann McMahon Quintero, Martha Guth and Robert McPherson. This year Saint John’s will debut it's new Gospel Choir, the Restovus Gospel Choir, accompanied by organist Warren Michel Swenson.  The  Dance of the Broken Glass (originated in 2006) will be performed by Meghan Merrill and John Sorenson-Jolink.  A prayer of remembrance will be offered by Cantor Daniel Neiden.

St. John’s Pastor, the Rev. Lyndon F. Harris, who directed the relief operation at St. Paul’s Chapel after 9/11, and currently directs the interfaith Gardens of Forgiveness initiative, will preside.

A reception and book signing will follow.

Following the service there will be a book signing by Polish Holocaust survivor Luna Kaufman, to celebrate the publication of her award-winning autobiography, "Luna’s Life: A Journey of Forgiveness and Triumph."

Tuesday 10th November

At 9:30AM on Tuesday 10th November, St John's will host a breakfast with Dr. Susanna Kokkonen, Director of Christian Friends of Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. This is an opportunity for faith community leaders to hear about and support Christian Friends of Yad Vashem.
